Dr. Cole is a Full Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics with a conjoint appointment in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois. He is the Section Head of the Cartilage Research Program at RUSH University Medical Center and the Cartilage Restoration Center (CRC) at Rush, a multidisciplinary program specializing in the restoration of articular cartilage of the shoulder, elbow and knee as well as the treatment of meniscal deficiency through meniscus transplantation. Currently the CRC is the largest center of its kind in the world offering non-joint replacement options for arthritis in younger individuals.

Dr. Cole received his MD and MBA from the University of Chicago in 1990, completed his residency at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York in 1996, and his Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh in 1997. He specializes in arthroscopic shoulder, elbow and knee surgery. He has a specific interest in arthroscopic reconstruction of athlete's shoulder (rotator cuff, instability, labral tears and arthritis), elbow and knee.

He has authored and edited several hundred publications, including four highly acclaimed orthopaedic textbooks on sports medicine, arthroscopy and cartilage transplantation. His literary contributions include nearly one hundred peer-reviewed articles, dozens of book chapters, technique papers, and digital multimedia presentations describing the techniques and results of shoulder, elbow and knee surgery. Dr. Cole lectures and teaches the techniques of cartilage restoration and shoulder and elbow arthroscopy nationally and internationally and performs clinical and basic science research in these areas.

Dr. Cole was chosen as one of the "Best Doctors in America" in 2004 and 2005 and as a "Top Doctor" in the Chicago Metro area in 2003, 2004 and 2005 which landed him on the cover of Chicago Magazine's "Top Doctor" issue in 2006. Dr. Cole is the team physician for the Chicago Bulls NBA Basketball team, co-team physician for the Chicago White Sox Major League Baseball team, and orthopaedic surgeon for the Chicago Rush Professional Arena Football team.
